Difficulty:

A little bit of experience.

Material:

The idea for the leftover fabric from another sewing project.

  1. Mid or lightweight fabric with a good drape
  2. Thread in matching color.

Finished size:

Length – 21 cm (8 ½”)

Width – 18–20 cm (7 ¼” – 8″), depending on your drawstring adjustment.

Leelavadee pattern pieces for one pocket:

  1. Leelavadee patch pocket: Cut 1 on fold (see fold symbol).
  2. Pocket drawstring casing, cut 2.
  3. Pocket string (a ribon), cut 1.
  4. Option: Pocket opening band cut 1.

Tip: For a playful touch, try using a different fabric color for the pocket open band and pocket string. It adds a lovely contrast and highlights the handmade detail.

Sewing Instructions – Leelavadee Drawstring Patch Pocket

If you don’t like the raw-edge style shown in the tutorial, you can serge (overlock) the opening edge of the pocket instead.
Press the seam allowance inward and topstitch it for a clean finish.

🪡 Sewing the Opening Band

  1. Fold the pocket opening band in half and press.
  2. Pin and sew the opening band along the pressed line to the opening curve, right sides together (keep the raw edges on the same side).
  3. Fold the band over to the edge side, press, and topstitch it neatly.

🧵 Drawstring Casing

  1. Fold the short ends of the drawstring casing twice and topstitch.
  2. Fold one long edge of the casing seam allowance and press.
Note: There is a left and a right pocket.
  3. Pin and sew the casing to the pocket, right sides together, along the upper dashed line — or use the opening band as a guide.
Don’t forget to backstitch! (See red dashed line, Image A)
  4. Fold the casing down, press, and topstitch it.

🎀 Drawstring

  1. Fold the drawstring strip lengthwise twice, press, and edge-stitch it.
  2. Tie a knot at each end of the string, then cut it in half.
  3. Use a safety pin to thread the string through the casing.
  4. Sew the ends of the string to the ends of the casing to keep them secure.

✂️ Finishing

  1. Serge along the pocket’s seam allowance.
  2. Fold the seam allowance inward, press, and your Leelavadee pocket is ready to be attached to your project.

I hope you enjoy making your new Leelavadee patch pockets.
